European History Extra Credit Homework
Choose One of the following tasks and have it ready for next week
1. Be an artist: Draw a picture of an expedition. It could be the building of ship, sailing across the ocean, a new settlement, or contact with indigenous people. It could be a picture of daily life traveling across the ocean. Keep in mind how the explorers dressed and what the environment would have looked like. The picture will be graded on content not artistic skill. The more elements in the picture the better.
2. Be an investigator: Research daily life at sea. Photocopy or print off a picture of an explorer's ship. How did the ship function? What did they eat on the long voyage and where did they cook on the ship? Create margins and detail with written descriptions of what the elements in the picture are.
3. Be a writer: Write a one page paper on an explorer's innovation. This could include a how they navigated, what they ate on the trip, what tools they would use, what did they sleep on, and what they wore? Don't focus as much on spelling, though you should try to answer as many who, what, when where, and whys as possible.
4. Be a builder: Build an explorer's ship. Make a model out of sticks, toothpicks, Popsicle sticks, glue, rope, and or floral foam. Do a little research. Include elements that distinguish this ship from other ships we have studied. Also keep in mind not to make it so big that it would be difficult to bring into class.
5. Be a Bible scholar: During the age of exploration, many non-westerners encountered Christianity for the first time. Though in many instances the indigenous people were forced to become Christians, some chose to follow Christ our of their own free will. Read Acts 10:9-16 and write what Paul's vision has to do with the indigenous people that the westerners encountered. If these westerners did not have the right motivation to convert the indigenous people into Christians, then what should their motivation been?
